Dear Parents and Carers,
Since opening in 1898, Merinda State School has proudly served the families of Merinda, Bowen and surrounding communities. Our long tradition of quality education, strong sporting culture and meaningful community connection continues to guide us today. As a small, multi-age school, we offer something truly special — a close-knit learning environment where every child is known, valued and supported across their entire primary journey.
Our approach reflects the Queensland Department of Education's vision of excellence in every state school — high expectations for every student, in every classroom, every day. We are committed to driving excellence in teaching and learning, with a strong and deliberate focus on English and Mathematics as the foundations for lifelong success. Through evidence-based practices, careful monitoring of student progress and responsive teaching, we ensure each child progresses in their learning every year.
At Merinda State School, our multi-age classrooms provide unique opportunities for leadership, collaboration and personalised support. Older students model positive learning habits and mentor younger peers, while teachers differentiate learning to respond to each student's strengths, interests and needs. This structure strengthens belonging, builds confidence and nurtures resilience — creating a positive and inclusive learning culture where all students feel safe and supported to thrive.
We are deeply committed to educational achievement and belonging. We closely monitor student growth in English and Mathematics, attendance and engagement, and support confident participation in NAPLAN. Our goal is not only strong academic outcomes, but also the development of positive learning habits, respectful behaviour and pride in our school. Safe and disciplined learning environments underpin everything we do.
As a school, we embrace local decision-making to respond to the unique needs of our community. We value partnerships with families and recognise that education is most powerful when schools and parents work together. Encouraging daily reading, supporting homework and maintaining open communication with teachers significantly enhances student outcomes. We also warmly invite families to engage with our Parents and Citizens' Association, whose ongoing support enriches opportunities for all students.
We are equally committed to innovation and continuous improvement. By strengthening teaching expertise, building professional capability within our workforce and responsibly embracing digital technologies, we ensure our students are prepared for the future. Our focus remains clear: every student, every day, achieving progress and developing the confidence to realise their full potential.
Thank you for choosing Merinda State School. It is a privilege to lead a school where relationships matter, community is strong and every child's learning journey is valued.
Yours faithfully,
Colette Williams
